Viaggiare in bicicletta, molti non potranno far altro che concordare, finisce spesso col trasformarsi in una specie di droga: CREA DIPENDENZA !! Allora ogni scusa, indipendentemente dalla stagione, si trasforma facilmente nell’occasione buona per partire, più o meno com’è successo anche per questo nuovo viaggio.
Nel profondo sud ero già stato una prima volta nell’ottobre 2012 con “Al di là del ponte”, più recentemente nell’ottobre 2015 con “OO-Obiettivo Ortigia”. Questa volta però siamo in due, irrinunciabile il desiderio di condividere le emozioni, le sofferenze ma anche i grandi piaceri di un viaggio come questo con chi mi accompagna ormai da una vita …
Si parte da Crotone e seguendo tutta la costa ionica prima della Calabria e poi della Sicilia punteremo ad arrivare fino all’ Isola delle Correnti, all’estremo punto meridionale della Sicilia.
Il tutto ovviamente in tandem, il nostro 2016 inizia così.
Just
realizing now that travelling by bicycle often ends-up turning into a sort of a
drug: any excuse, so far, regardless of the season, easily tends indeed to transform into a
good occasion to pack-up your bike and just leave … and that’s exactly what happened
also for this new trip.
In the deep
South of Italy I’d already been several times of course, by bicycle however only
a first time in October 2012 and more recently in October 2015.
Being
January, this time it will be a full winter cycling experience and therefore,
at least in the attempt to meet a milder weather, the trip shall start from
Crotone and then following the Ionian coast of Calabria first and then Sicily
we will aim to end-up to 'Isola delle Correnti”, the southernmost point of
Sicily.

Il viaggio prosegue tra campi ondulati coltivati a finocchio e carciofi fino alla poco invitante area urbana di Capo Rizzuto. Va un po' meglio in prossimità di le Castella dove, appena appena collegato alla terraferma da un esile cordone ombelicale, troviamo lo splendido e tutto sommato ben conservato castello aragonese.
Ancora pochi km, non particolarmente belli, ed arriviamo a Cropani dove troviamo alloggio nell'unico B&B, aperto, del posto.

Passing by Capo
Colonna we stopped for a while in the neighbourhood of the Greek temple of Hera
Lacinia where the ruins of the only one left column still dominate the blue horizon.
The journey
continues through a sort of gentle rolling fields planted with fennel and
artichokes till the somehow unappealing urban area of Capo Rizzuto. It goes a
bit better in the vicinity of le Castella where, barely connected to the
mainland by a thin land strip, we can visit the beautiful and so far well
preserved Aragonese castle.
Just a few more kilometers, not particularly beautiful, and we finally arrive in Cropani where we can find accommodation in the only open B&B of the place !!

Tappa breve ma durissima.
Freddo, molto freddo, e acqua, tanta acqua. A tratti neve !!!
Il percorso prevedeva in effetti alcune deviazioni verso il mare ma, causa di forza maggiore, alla fine ci siamo purtroppo dovuti adattare ad un tragitto quasi tutto su statale (SS106), piuttosto trafficato anche se mai particolarmente pericoloso.
Il passaggio per Copanello senz'altro il tratto più critico; inevitabile il passaggio per una alquanto buia galleria di 500 m, pure in salita, che prima di partire mi ero studiato con la lente d'ingrandimento ... proprio nel tentativo, ahimè rivelatosi non praticabile, di non percorrerla affatto!!
Subito fuori dalla galleria, prendendo una deviazione sulla destra e abbandonando quindi la statale, abbiamo imboccato un percorso per così dire "alternativo" ... nel senso che la strada era più volte bloccata per frane e per caduta sassi. Tratto comunque molto bello, per buona parte a picco sul mare.
L'arrivo a Soverato è tutto sotto un'acqua freddissima e il meritato riparo al caldo di un B&B in centro ci risolleva e ci rimette in forma per prepararci per il giorno successivo.

The planned
route was envisaging indeed some deviations to the sea but, due to the very bad
weather conditions, at the end we unfortunately had to adapt the planned route to
follow the main road (strada statale SS106), quite busy indeed though never
dangerous at all.
To
highlight the transition to Copanello, definitely the most critical section of
the stage; here inevitable the passage for a very dark tunnel of 500 m that
before leaving I studied with a magnifying glass ... just in the attempt to avoid
it !!
Immediately
out of the tunnel, taking a detour to the right and so far leaving the SS106,
the road was repeatedly blocked by landslides and falling rocks. Nevertheless a
very nice bit of a road, for the most part overlooking the sea from the top.
The arrival
in Soverato under a very cold rain offered us a pretty well-deserved shelter where
to warm&dry-up and make plannings for the day after. |

Oggi bellissima giornata, temperature più miti e, soprattutto, niente pioggia.
Lunghi tratti a pochi metri dal mare, attraversando centri balneari che in questi giorni d'inverno si presentano per lo più totalmente deserti.
Un cenno particolare per la loro bellezza va ai lungomare di Soverato (nella foto qui sotto), di Roccella e ovviamente di Gioiosa Ionica.

Today, as
soon as the dawn light started to filter through the window blinds I realized
that the day would have been much milder than foreseen and, above all, with no
rain at all.
Most of the
road continued to follow the coastline with long stretches overlooking only from
a few meters away the sea, from time to time crossing summer resorts mostly totally
desert in these winter days.
A particular mention for their beauty goes to the waterfronts of Soverato, Gioiosa e Roccella Ionica.

La "tregua meteo" ... per ora tiene !!! Anche oggi una splendida giornata con temperature oscillanti tra i 13 °C del mattino e i 17 °C del pomeriggio.
Mare splendido, non sempre in grado purtroppo di tenere la testa al diffuso degrado circostante, un vero totale ed irresponsabile scempio fatto di migliaia di orribili case incomplete e vuote a pochi passi dalla spiaggia e poi la solita infame spazzatura abbandonata ovunque. Dispiace enormemente vedere tanto splendore compromesso irrimediabilmente da tanta stupidità umana, dalle molteplici e fin troppo diffuse forme di piaghe clientelari andate avanti per così tanti anni nonchè dall'inqualificabile assenza totale dello Stato. Grandioso esempio di fottutissima anarchia ambientale e autocastrazione sociale !!!
The nice weather

Crispy air blows and superb sea views are obviously deeply welcome though, unfortunately, they seem to be totally unable to "compete" nor "compensate" for so much widespread degradation of the surroundings, hundreds of horrible and generally empty or incomplete houses just a few steps from the beach and then the usual infamous junk abandoned everywhere. A magnificent example of an environmental irresponsible anarchy, in other words a sort of a total social and economic self-castration !!!

Tuttavia l'emozione di riuscire a vedere dall'altra parte dello stretto la Sicilia è ugualmente grande e appagante; sullo sfondo la sagoma dell'Etna che si nasconde tra le nuvole e un cielo plumbeo come raramente avevo visto fanno da cornice al lungomare più bello che mi possa venire in mente.

23JAN2016: Reggio Calabria
A parte il notevole degrado, che peraltro già conoscevo, il centro di Reggio Calabria è e rimane semplicemente splendido. Maestose magnolie fanno da cornice agli eleganti palazzi del lungomare, la Sicilia è solo a pochi passi dall'altro lato dello stretto, e poi Messina, l'Etna ... ed un ponte che fortunatamente non c'è fanno tutto il resto !!
Questa è la seconda volta che visito Reggio Calabria, sicuramente ci ritornerò.
Un cenno particolare va ai Bronzi di Riace, finalmente restaurati, finalmente in piedi in tutta la loro maestosa eleganza !!!
Apart the sad degradation of its surroundings the centre of Reggio Calabria is nevertheless worth to be visited. Worth to mention the magnificent magnolias that enrich the seaside boulevard and the Riace Bronzes, finally restored and now standing-up in all their majestic elegance !!!
Durante la notte ho purtroppo fatto un brutto sogno: "Il sogno del Ponte sullo Stretto di Messina". Nel sogno mi è apparso bello, raffinato, elegante ... orribile !!
Un'orribile magia che è andata avanti la durata ... di un sogno appunto !!
La Calabria è la Calabria, la Sicilia è la Sicilia, il "ponte" sullo stretto non serve, il ferry almeno per ora basta e avanza !!!
Due notti a Reggio Calabria, una non particolarmente bella e per certi versi rarefatta sensazione ... quella di un'italia che pian piano non c'è più.
During the night I unfortunately had a very bad dream: the bridge over the Strait was there !!! In the dream it appeared to be beautiful, refined, elegant ... horrible !! Fortunately it was just a dream, nothing more !!

Superate comunque le difficoltà iniziali, il resto del percorso prosegue lungo la statale che però, grazie all'autostrada parallela, non risulta mai trafficata più di tanto.
I vari lungomare fino a Taormina, nostra destinazione finale, ne arricchiscono con una certa continuità i dintorni; molto belli quelli di Alì, Roccalumera e Mazzarò.
Nevertheless,
once overcome the initial town outskirts, the rest of the route followed the
main road again that, thanks to the parallel motorway, was never busy at all.

Passaggi forse un pelo "accidentati" ma pur sempre splendidi: Fiume Freddo, Riposto, Giarre, Acireale, Aci Trezza, Aci Castello.
Nowadays it appears somehow easy to have everything as for granted, though certain
little emotions are still possible, such as cycling in the heart of winter and
be faced with scenarios like the one of the picture below: this was the volcan Etna
this morning in all its “white cap” elegant magnificence.
Other awesome pieces of a road during today stage, perhaps a little bit "rough" but still definitely beautiful, were: Fiumefreddo, Riposto, Giarre, Acireale, Aci Trezza, Aci Castello.

Il litorale tra Catania e Siracusa, solo a tratti, non è particolarmente amico anche se, almeno fino ad Augusta, risulta piuttosto semplice da seguire.
Ad Augusta, non lontano dai petrolchimici di Priolo, le cose si complicano: la strada statale SS 114-Orientale Sicula diventa di fatto vietata al transito in bicicletta. Obbligatorio dunque spostarsi sulla provinciale (ex SS114) "accarezzando" così i diversi km del petrolchimico ed arrivare finalmente e felicemente a Siracusa imboccando per finire la bellissima ciclabile ricavata dal tracciato della vecchia ferrovia.
I do not know exactly why but getting out of Catania has always been easier than entering in its urban area. The road between Catania and Siracusa is not particularly cycle-friendly and, especially around Augusta, not simple to follow at all. Indeed once in the surrounding of Augusta, not far from the petrochemical plants of Priolo, things all of a sudden get somehow complicated: the SS-114 Orientale Sicula becomes a sort of a motorway and as such effectively banned to the transit by bicycles. Mandatory therefore at this point to move to the provincial road (i.e. SP114, ex SS114) following by close several kilometers of the petrochemical plants for finally arriving to Siracusa through the splendid cycleway built just a few years ago on top of the dismissed railway track.

Ecco come mi è apparsa solo poche ore fa, a poco più di una manciata di metri di distanza, l’Isola delle Correnti … una specie di magico miraggio all’incrocio tra il mar Jonio e il canale di Sicilia.

An exciting
piece of coastline, all over through extremely quiet roads always overlooking
by close a splendid sea. After a few km, just from a little more than an handful
of meters away, l' isola delle Correnti (the Isle of Currents) ... a kind of magical mirage between the Ionian
Sea and the Channel of Sicily.
